Properties Uses and Facts about Tungsten
What is Tungsten
Tungsten is a metal, classified as a transition metal, and chemically
tungsten is an element. The density of tungsten is 19.3 grams per cubic
centimeter. Tungsten metal is found in the solid state at room temperature,
with a melting point of 3410 °C (6170 °F) and a boiling point of 5660 °C
(10220 °F). Tungsten has an atomic mass of 183.84 AMU, atomic number 74, and
symbol (W). In the Periodic Table, tungsten is located in group 6, period 6
and block (D), its atom has 74 electrons, 74 protons, 110 neutrons and 6
energy levels.
Tungsten metal was discovered in 1783 by two brothers named Juan Jose and
Fausto Elhuyar, a Spanish chemist.
Properties of Tungsten Metal
- Tungsten is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a tinge of gray.
- Tungsten is a hard metal.
- Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals.
- Tungsten is chemically less reactive, it does not react with oxygen at ordinary temperatures, tungsten reacts with oxygen only at temperatures above 400 °C.
- Tungsten metal becomes ductile at high temperatures, so thin wires can be made from it.
- Tungsten dissolves in nitric acid and aqya regia.
- Tungsten is a good conductor of electricity and heat.
- Tungsten powder and tungsten dust are highly flammable and explosive.
- All tungsten compounds are toxic.
Uses of Tungsten Metal
- Tungsten is used to make the filament of fluorescent bulbs, these bulbs emit a lot of heat along with light, these types of bulbs are not very energy efficient, so nowadays LED bulbs are used instead.
- Tungsten is used in arc welding electrodes.
- Tungsten is used as a heating element in electric furnaces.
- Parts of spacecraft, rocket engines, missiles and high-speed fighter aircraft that withstand high temperatures are made from tungsten.
- Such alloys are made by adding tungsten to steel, which maintains its strength even at high temperatures.
- Tungsten carbide is an extremely hard compound, it is used for making high speed cutting tools, drills etc. that work at high temperatures.
- Tungsten disulfide is a dry lubricant, it is used for lubrication at high temperatures.
- Tungsten alloys are used in radar equipment.
- Tungsten is used as an emitter coil in an X-ray machine.
- Tungsten is used in microchip technology and liquid crystal displays.
Interesting facts about tungsten metal
- Tungsten is the 56th most abundant element in the Earth's crust.
- The largest production of tungsten in the world is done in China, which accounts for more than 60% of the total tungsten production in the world.
- Long-term exposure to tungsten can cause irritation of the eyes and lungs, difficulty breathing, and itching and swelling of the skin.
- Scheelite and wolframite are the main minerals of tungsten.
