    What is Cadmium

    Cadmium metal is classified as a transition metal, and chemically it is an element. Cadmium has a density of 8.65 grams per cubic centimeter. Cadmium has an atomic mass of 112.414 AMU, atomic number 48 and its symbol (Cd). In the Periodic Table, Cadmium is located in Group 12, Period 5 and Block (D). Its atom has 48 electrons, 48 protons, 64 neutrons and 5 energy levels. Cadmium metal is found in the solid state at room temperature. Its melting point is 321.07 °C (609.93 °F) and its boiling point is 765 °C (1409 °F).

    • Cadmium is known to absorb neutrons, so it is used to make control rods for nuclear reactors.
    • Cadmium alloys are used to make low friction bearings.
    • Cadmium and silver are combined to make solder, which is used in electrical parts.
    • Cadmium sulphide is used as a yellow pigment.
    • In the past, cadmium was used in the cathode ray tubes of color televisions.
    • Cadmium is used as a stabilizer for plastics.
