Strontium is classified as an alkaline earth metal, and chemically
strontium is an element. Strontium has the symbol (Sr), atomic number 38,
and atomic mass 87.62 amu. Its atom has 38 electrons, 38 protons, 50
neutrons and 5 energy levels. In the Periodic Table, Strontium is located in
Group 2, Period 5 and Block (S). Strontium has a density of 2.64 grams per
cubic centimeter. Strontium is found in the solid state at room temperature,
with a melting point of 777 °C (1431 °F) and a boiling point of 1384 °C
(2523.2 °F).
Strontium was discovered by Irish chemist Adair Crawford in 1790.
