    What is Zinc Nitrate

    Zinc nitrate is an inorganic compound. It is the zinc salt of nitric acid. Its chemical formula is Zn(NO3)2. It is also known as Zinc dinitrate. Zinc nitrate is a white crystalline solid, which is highly deliquescent in nature. Zinc nitrate is commonly found in the form of the hexahydrate Zn(NO3)2.6H2O. Zinc nitrate is usually made by dissolving zinc in nitric acid. It is used as a catalyst in resin production, manufacturing of chemicals and in the manufacture of medicines. It is also used for the synthesis of coordination polymers in the laboratory.

    Properties of Zinc Nitrate

    • Zinc nitrate occurs as a colourless, odorless crystalline solid or as a white powder.
    • Zinc nitrate is highly deliquescent, meaning the substance absorbs moisture from the atmosphere until it dissolves in the absorbed water and forms a solution.
    • Its density is 2.06 grams per cubic centimeter.
    • Its molar mass is 189.36 g/mol.
    • Its hexahydrate form Zn(NO3)2.6H2O molar mass is 297.49g/mol.
    • It is soluble in water and alcohol.
    • Zinc nitrate is acidic in nature.
    • Zinc nitrate is found in solid state at room temperature, its melting point is 110 °C and its boiling point is 125 °C.
    • It is not itself flammable, but accelerates the burning of combustible material.
    • It may explode if exposed to fire or heat for a long time.
    • A fire involving zinc nitrate produces toxic oxides of nitrogen.
    • When it is heated to decompose, it emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides and zinc oxide.

    • It is used as a strong oxidizing agent.
    • It is used in the manufacture of other chemicals and as a catalyst in dyes.
    • It is used as a color binder in dyeing.
    • It is used in liquid fertilizers.
    • Zinc nitrate is used as a corrosion inhibitor to protect metal surfaces.
    • It is used as a desiccant to remove moisture from the air and other substances.

    • Zinc nitrate is a liquid usually prepared by dissolving zinc in nitric acid:- Zn + 2HNO₃ (dil.) → Zn(NO3)2 + H2.
    • Inhaling zinc nitrate dust causes nose and throat irritation, while swallowing trace amounts of it can cause erosion of the alimentary tract. Contact with zinc nitrate on the skin can cause burns and skin rashes. Toxic oxides of nitrogen can be released when zinc nitrate is heated. Zinc nitrate itself is not flammable, but when it comes in contact with other flammable substances, it increases the intensity of their combustion, which can sometimes be dangerous.
