    What is Neon

    Neon is classified as a nonmetal, it is a noble gas. Chemically, neon is an element. The symbol for neon is Ne, and its atomic number is 10 and its atomic mass is 20.1797 amu. Neon has a density of 0.9 grams per 1000 cubic centimeters. Neon is found in the gaseous state at room temperature. Neon has a melting point of −248.59 °C (−415.46 °F) and a boiling point of −246.08 °C (−410.94 °F). Neon's atom has 10 electrons, 10 protons, 10 neutrons and 2 energy levels. In the Periodic Table, Neon is located in Group 18, Period 2 and Block (P).

    Neon was discovered in 1895 by Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay.

    • Neon is a colourless, odorless and tasteless gas.

    • Neon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe, but it is found in very small amounts on Earth.
    • Neon is found in substantial quantities in stars, neon is formed by the fusion of helium and oxygen atoms during star formation.
    • The cooling capacity of liquid neon is 40 times that of liquid helium, and 3 times that of liquid hydrogen.
    • Neon when leaked into the air acts as an asphyxiant, meaning that when leaked into the air, neon displaces oxygen gas, causing the oxygen level in the air to drop. That's why care should be taken while working with neon, it is a colorless and odorless gas, it is not detected when it leaks and due to continuous breathing in it, a person becomes unconscious due to lack of oxygen and can die in severe cases. 
    • Neon is an inert gas, but in the controlled atmosphere of the laboratory, neon can form a compound with fluorine.
