    What is Krypton

Krypton is classified as a nonmetal, it is a noble gas. Chemically, krypton is an element. Krypton is found in the gaseous state at normal temperature. Its melting point is -157.2 °C (-250.95 °F), and its boiling point is -153.4 °C (-244.12 °F). Krypton has a density of 3.74 grams per 1000 cubic centimeters. In the Periodic Table, Krypton is located in Group 18, Period 4 and Block (P). Krypton has the symbol Kr, atomic number 36 and atomic mass 83.798 amu. Krypton's atom has 36 electrons, 36 protons, 48 neutrons and 4 energy levels.

Krypton was discovered in 1898 by Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay.

    Properties of Krypton Gas

    • Krypton is a colorless and odorless gas.
    • Krypton is an inert gas, it does not react with any other element except fluorine.
    • At temperatures below minus 157.2 °C, krypton gas solidifies, appearing as a white crystalline structure.
    • Krypton reacts very quickly to electric current.
    • When an electric current is passed through krypton gas, it glows with a very bright white light.

    Uses of Krypton Gas

    • Krypton is a rare and very expensive gas, so its uses are extremely limited.
    • Krypton gas is used in making high speed flash for high speed photography.
    • In some fluorescent bulbs, krypton is used along with argon gas.
    • Fluorescent bulbs made of argon and krypton gas give light of orange-red color, they are very bright bulbs and their light is visible to a greater distance than other lights, their light also crosses the fog. Hence they are used in high power arc lights used at airports.
    • Radioactive Krypton-85 is used to test for leakage in sealed containers.
    • From 1960 to 1983, the krypton isotope krypton-86 was used to determine the 1 meter standard measure of length.
    • Krypton gas is used to make lasers.
    • Krypton laser is used in the surgery of the retina of the eye, surgery with Krypton laser causes a blood clot, which automatically stops the bleeding. And it is also so accurate that it does not harm the surrounding cells.
    • Krypton gas is also used for research in the laboratory.

    Interesting facts about Krypton Gas

    • Krypton gas is 2.8 times more heavier than normal air.
    • Krypton is found in the free state in the atmosphere, about 0.0001 percent of krypton gas is found in the atmosphere.
    • Krypton gas is obtained by distillation of liquefied air.
    • Krypton is an extremely rare gas, so its value is also very high.
    • About 8 tons of krypton gas are produced annually in the world from liquid air.
